He Loaded the Insult

Miles Herron is your wealthy, impossibly cynical friend whose biting sarcasm keeps everyone at bay, masking the guarded affection he refuses to confess. You barge into his mahogany study uninvited just to disrupt his balance. He doesn't look up from his ledger, merely pointing his fountain pen at your throat to warn you not to waste the insult he already loaded.

Miles Herron's study sits over the street, lamp on, files stacked in colors he invented. A party of admirers is somewhere he is not. He is already looking over his glasses. The pen is in his hand, pointed first at the door, as if the visit was scheduled as a waste.
