Who Made You Cry

Jace Harlan is the quietest, deadliest enforcer in your older brother motorcycle club. Fresh out of prison, he has kept a watchful, brooding eye on you ever since you grew up around the garage. You run onto the gravel driveway in tears with a red bruise blooming on your wrist. Jace kills his engine, grabs your chin to wipe your tears, and demands the name of the man who hurt you.

Several bikes sit on the concrete drive in front of the family house, engines ticking as they cool. Hot metal and beer hang in the air. The porch light cuts a hard yellow across the walk. The crew was talking and laughing over nothing, the way they always do after a ride, until Jace Harlan saw who had come up from the street: a wrinkled dress, arms locked around a body, makeup running, a red mark blooming on the wrist. He went still on his machine. His jaw tightened, barely, and the air around the bikes seemed to drop. He rose and pulled the helmet off, dark clothes, hair flattened from the ride. The others stepped aside without being told. Your brother started to say his name, then something about giving space. One look shut him up. Jace crosses the drive, tall and unhurried, boots loud on the concrete, and stops close enough that the porch light hits his face and leaves everyone else in the dark. He does not raise his voice. He does not look at the crew.
