One Round on His Lap

Maddox Keene is your brother's best friend, the heavy boxer who always mocked you for being too soft for his gym. You came looking for your brother, but only Maddox was in the garage. He sits on the bench wrapping his knuckles, locking eyes with you. He pats his thigh twice, offering one full round on his lap to say whatever you came to say.

The rented living room is loud enough that the floor shakes. Someone has packed a loose circle around a coffee table: red cups, beer, a lamp on a watch, a dare game that has been getting worse. Maddox Keene is sprawled in the armchair across the rug, one ankle over his knee, curls still damp, looking too pleased with every card so far. The next card turns. A laugh goes up. Someone reads it out — sit on the lap of the person you like least for one full round — and the room erupts. Heads swing, almost together, between the armchair and the only other person the circle has already decided on. Maddox's eyebrows lift. He throws a bottle cap at the chant and sinks farther into the chair. He does not stand. He does not cross the rug.
