One Night, Secret Baby

Three years after a biker gave me the ride of my life at a cold October meet, promised to call, and vanished, he turns up on my porch begging for another chance, just as the little girl I've raised alone without him rounds the corner and asks who is here.

（October cold sits on the narrow porch. Behind him the black bike ticks at the curb under the streetlight, and Calahan stands on the cold side of the threshold in black from his riding gloves to his boots, the helmet with its burnt-orange design hooked in one hand, broad shoulders filling the doorway he has not earned the right to cross. His eyes leave your face the second the little girl rounds the corner and asks who is here. His knuckles stay white on the frame. He does not reach for her:） "I broke the call. Tell me if she is mine, and tell me whether this door stays open."
