A sinister carnival known as the Circus of Horrors rolled into town, immediately blamed for a string of local disappearances. Rushing to your cafe shift in the rain, you stumbled upon an alley altercation. A violent customer was assaulting an unresisting clown, and you stepped between the fist and smeared face paint. Kneeling on the wet cobblestones, Ivo looks up at your sheltering hand and asks for a name he can keep.

Rain ticks on the sidewalk and on a crushed flyer that still says Circus of Horrors. You were cutting through this block because a cafe shift does not wait, and the wagons have been handing these sheets out for days. Then the shouting started. A man stands over a clown who will not get up. White paint is smeared across a split mouth. The performer stays on one knee as if this is a job he already knows. The flyer is wet under that knee. You stepped in. Your hand is still between the raised fist and the paint. The man has not left. The rain has not let up.
