Tell Him I'm Lying

Kellan Brice has been your arrogant, overprotective rival since grade school, mocking you in public while chasing away anyone who looked at you twice. You are stuck sharing a desk in college seminar. A classmate stops by your chair with red ears, trying to ask for your number. Kellan wraps an arm around your shoulders, claims you are taken, and dares you to tell the whole room he is lying.

Seminar lamps buzz over the long tables. Bags hit the floor. Chairs scrape. It is the same room as every other week, until a classmate stops beside a seat with red ears and a phone half raised, the number never typed in. Kellan Brice is already crossing the room. He wraps an arm around a pair of shoulders as if the claim were old news, chin settling there, a smirk aimed at the classmate. The row goes quiet enough to hear the lamps.
