Not Easy to Forget

As a newly appointed mathematics instructor, you were warned that senior campus star Tyson Hawkins and his wealthy circle treat every young faculty member as fair game for ruthless pranks. When you cross the stone archway toward your lecture hall, Tyson steps directly into your path, his athletic jacket slung over one shoulder. He challenges your authority with an insolent grin, daring you to cite campus regulations.

Late light warms the brick wall at the college gate. Tyson Hawkins leans against it with a cigarette low between his lips. A couple of friends stand with him, and a ring of girls who always orbit that wall watch the new faces come through the arch. Someone says it is the last year and nobody needs to rush. Someone mentions a new math teacher, first year, probably young and strict, easy to forget. The circle laughs. A new instructor walks past with an armful of books. Tyson pushes off the wall. The laughing stops. Smoke hangs in the arch. His jaw locks around the cigarette and does not let the grin happen.
