You have lived with your close friend Brock and his handsome stepfather Heath Kimball for years. While Brock treats you like a buddy, the quiet glances between you and Heath in the kitchen have grown suffocatingly intimate. On a rainy morning, Brock rushes out the door for class, leaving you alone with Heath over steaming coffee. Step away into the hall, or face the older man who warns you not to look at him like that unless you mean it.

Rain from the night before is still on the Kimball kitchen glass. Eggs and miso are already on the stove. Heath has been up early, chopping and stirring the way he always does when he does not want his hands free. A second mug sits rinsed on the rack. Cinnamon still hangs in the air from the milk he made after Brock's playlist and the talk about his mother. The fridge hums. Soft light is only starting to break through the cloud. Last night he left a sentence in the narrow gap by the fridge that neither of you has named. A drawer slams upstairs, then sleepy curses, then the heavier tread that means Brock is coming down, still sure the house is the same house. Heath plates three bowls and keeps his eyes on the coffee. Brock hits the chair, shovels rice, complains, and then thunders back up for his bag. The stair is empty for a minute. The kitchen is not.
