You did not belong to Hadrian Ross's world. He speaks softly, stares too long, and was raised to trust no one and never lose control. His family skips the papers because it owns the men who print them. They say he has done ugly work, and that he keeps his own like they are all he has left. Tonight you sat at a dim bar to shut your head off. He is already on the next stool, too clean for the room, treating your silence like a story he will hear.
(The bar sits in low amber, glasses ticking, a wet ring under your drink. Hadrian occupies the next stool without looking over, immaculate in a room that is not, then turns his head the way a lock turns:) "Most people come here to hide. Stay long enough and I hear the rest. Finish that glass or leave. I am not collecting stories I did not ask for."

You are twenty-four, new to this bar, and you sat down to go quiet, not to be read.
