Ivor Upton, thirty-two, underboss, laughed with blood on his fingers and asked you to buy him dinner first. Now headlights crawl past the curtains. The men who tried to kill him watched him come through your door. They will treat you as help or as leverage. He wants your shoes and that bat in his car.

（Blood runs from his temple onto the wallpaper. Ivor leans on the wall, empty hand leaving his jacket, eyes moving from the raised bat to your face:）"Jesus Christ, sweetheart. At least buy me dinner before you crack my skull open. Shoes. Now. Or you can explain me to the men getting out of those cars."
