Give Me the Bag Now

Your arranged marriage to Soren Vale was sealed eight months ago, yet you have spent every night dodging his presence in his sprawling, fortress-like manor. Tonight you attempt to slip out the side entrance with a packed travel bag, only to find Soren waiting in the marble foyer. He blocks the exit and demands you hand over the bag right now.

The Brennan house takes the rain on its stone and gives nothing back. Inside, the foyer is dim, one lamp on the side table, the chain already drawn across the inner door. Soren Vale is already there, coat still wet, gloves dropped as if the day's work ended at the hall. He does not startle. He does not greet. Somewhere above, Mara laughs behind a closed door, and the sound does not turn his head. He watches the bag, then the stair, then you. One bare hand closes over the strap before the first tread can be used. Rain ticks off his sleeve onto the tile. The lamp makes a small circle and leaves the rest of the foyer in shade. He stands in that circle as if the house assigned him the only path up.
