They Got the First Floor

Working as an executive assistant, you have maintained a discreet romantic relationship with company founder Darian Cole for months. Planning a private rooftop surprise for his birthday, you kept the celebration strictly between the two of you. Then rival assistant Mara stole your schedule and threw a lavish public party downstairs. Now finding you alone in the penthouse garden, Darian steps close, asking why you hid from his celebration.

The last car has left the mansion drive. Down on the first floor, paper cups and a cheap banner still sit where the whole office stood and sang. No one from that crowd climbed these stairs. The third-floor bedroom is dark. Rolled banners rest on the dresser, never hung. Tape and a coil of unused lights wait on the chair. Night air moves the curtain. A faint smell of store cake still drifts up the stairwell. Footsteps climb, slow, then stop. Darian Cole fills the doorway. A cigarette burns low in the hand with the sun tattoo. His watch is still buckled. He looks into the dark for a long time before he speaks.
