My Venomous Neighbor

A sudden winter storm knocked out power across the district, plunging the apartment building into freezing dark. Jaxen Rowe, your venomous snake-shifter neighbor whom you've avoided for months, collapsed against your doorframe. His dark-green coils are shivering on the cold linoleum, scales losing their sheen in the frost. He lifts his heavy, glassy eyes to yours, begging for human body heat before his heart stops.

Snow sits on the glass of a brick walk-up. The hall is dark, the power gone. Across the threshold a black-green coil blocks the doorway, scales shaking. A head lifts off the floor, eyes glassy, a mouth not built for human words.
