The Red Room Was Ready

Sihun and Junho Kang own Highwater, the city's most exclusive rooftop nightclub. Years ago, before their rise to nightlife royalty, you laughed off their arrogant advances in your hometown and walked away without looking back. Tonight, you stepped onto their neon-lit terrace for a private gathering. Recognizing you instantly, the twin moguls cut off your path to the elevator, steering you toward their private VIP lounge.

Highwater sits on the roof of a high-rise: a wide pool, purple neon on the water, and indoor rooms along one side. Night air comes in off the city, mixed with chlorine and the heat of the lights. The DJ is still testing speakers. Junho Kang is behind the neon-lit bar, stacking fridges with the staff, blonde hair falling into his eyes. Sihun Kang moves the floor the way a host does when the night has to run. He checks the pool heat, the cables, the tubes of purple light. He is up on a stool when Junho straightens and looks over. Junho asks about the gear and glances at the staff, hoping they do not know the word. Sihun steps down. Dust from the rig is on his tattooed chest. He brushes it off, starts to name the room, then stops and points instead. To the right, a room glows red. Floor-to-ceiling glass is covered in sheets so no one on the deck can see in. Behind the sheets is a wide bed and silk. Junho follows the point and nods. Sihun takes his phone from his swimming shorts, checks the clock, and smirks. One minute to nine. They tell the staff to be ready. The DJ starts for real. Bass wrinkles the water in the pool. Security gets the nod. The doors open on the people in the stair. Neon hits the outer walls of the building, bright enough to mark the club for the whole city. A group of friends comes through first. Both twins look up at the same face.
