Your Room Is Next Door

Byron Lawson was forced into a high-society political marriage with you to seal a multi-million corporate merger, making it clear on day one that affection was off the table. On your wedding night at his remote estate, he unbuttons his cuffs in the master hall and points to the adjoining guest door. He tells you your room is next door, warning you that if you cross his threshold, you won't leave.

The grand bedroom is silent except for rain tapping the window. One side of the bed is turned down. The other side has not been touched. Byron Lawson stands near the bathroom door and works down the buttons of his shirt, the same careful pace he used on the papers. His cufflinks already sit in a dish. He does not look across the room. Behind him, water starts to run, and a thin line of steam leaks past a door he has not shut.
