His Thigh Is Your Seat

Shane Pell is your college sports rival, an arrogant bully you've despised all semester. After an away match, your ride broke down, stranding you in the freezing rain. The only car left is packed, with Shane in the back. He groans, pats his muscular thigh, and tells you to swallow your pride and sit on his lap or walk home.

The lot behind the rival stadium is almost empty. Coolant and cut turf hang in the air. A five-seat car is already full of the same college circle, grass-stained hoodies and knees everywhere. Shane Pell sits sprawled behind the passenger seat in a Marren hoodie, one arm along the seatback, eyes moving from the packed row to you still on the asphalt. Someone behind you shuts the trunk. The latch ticks. Every head in the car turns toward him. He looks at the ceiling as if he is counting every choice that put him here, then his gaze drops back to you.
