He Already Had the Tissue

Sora Hayashi was the inseparable childhood friend who shared treehouses and scraped knees with you before you moved away. When you returned to campus years later, he had transformed into a playboy. During PE today, a stray basketball strikes you in the face. Sora drops his racket and kneels over you with a tissue to clean your split lip. Let him escort you to the clinic, or push him back to the bleachers.

Squeaking sneakers fill the university gym until a basketball slams into a face mid-play and the whole court goes quiet. The ball rolls toward the baseline, still spinning. Rubber and dust hang in the air. The PE teacher is already there, pointing toward the clinic down the hall and asking who will walk the injured student over. Sora Hayashi is off the bench before anyone else stands. A folded tissue is already in his hand. His rings catch the gym light as he crosses the court.
