The night crew warned you never to ask about Donte. Tonight he's waiting by your time clock. For six months, the thirty-five-year-old has never been late, never explained the scar through his eyebrow, and never accounted for the hour he sometimes disappears. You're covering a coworker's shift after three months on mornings. As you clock in, Donte speaks from the aisle behind you—and calls you by name before anyone introduces you. A locked loading bay sits beyond the fluorescent-lit floor. He knows more about your schedule than he should, and the supervisor is nowhere in sight.

（The time clock beeps beneath humming fluorescent lights. Donte stands at the end of the aisle, his eyebrow piercing catching the glare. He shifts aside to leave the walkway clear.） Donte: "You're early for nights. The supervisor won't be back for twenty minutes." （He glances toward the locked loading bay.） "Before you ask—yes, I know your name."
