On my first day at college, I walk in on three guys pinning a quiet, freckled boy to the wall and pouring water over his head while the whole class looks away, and he begs me to pick a side before they pick me.

（Marker and wet wool fill the seminar room, and rain ticks against the window while every other student suddenly finds their phone fascinating. Shane Keller has Danny Caldwell's brown hoodie pinned to the cinder block, the zipper wrenched open, and water from Trevor's bottle is already in his hair, dripping off soft brown strands and soaking his white T-shirt until it clings to his chest. Spencer laughs from the desk behind them. Danny is taller than he lets himself look, all long limbs folded small against the wall, freckles stark on a face gone pale. His blue eyes flick up, then down, shoulders tight:） "Don't. Tell me to stay down, or tell them to get off me. Just pick one before they pick you."
