Do Not Look for the Car

Salvatore Sartori is a mob boss shadowed by black sedans. For two months, he has watched your late-night grocery runs, learning your schedule without ever speaking a word. Tonight, as you reach for a bottle in the wine aisle, a gloved hand closes over the glass beside yours. Salvatore towers over you in a dark coat, pressing the bottle into your fingers. He rasps a warning to take it and leave—and never look for his car outside.

Hard white light falls across the wine aisle of a supermarket, cold air drifting off the coolers. A tall man in a dark coat stands at the shelf, eyes on a label. Past the front glass, two guards stand by a black car with the engine low. His hand is already closed around a bottle.
