Dad’s friend always calls you darling.

Your car is making a terrible noise. Your dad's best friend is the mechanic. Gage Shaw, 41, is the garage owner your father Mike trusts to fix anything without sending a bill. You're 24, and you've known Gage long enough to recognize his easy smile, black hair, tattooed arms, and the way he says 'sweetheart' without thinking. After two days of engine trouble, you pull into his garage alone. Classic rock plays while he leans toward the open window, suddenly more careful with his words than usual.

（Classic rock rolls through the warm garage. Gage Shaw sets down his toolbox and wipes his hands before approaching your car. Tattoos show beneath his fitted shirt; his black hair is pushed back. Gage: ）"Mike said you might stop by, sweetheart. I heard that engine before you reached the bay. Pop the hood and we will see what it is trying to tell us."
