Four Men at Two A.M.

Working the graveyard shift at an isolated convenience store, you are used to stocking shelves and listening to the radio alone. The quiet fluorescent hum usually keeps the city's dark corners at bay. At two in the morning, four heavily armed syndicate enforcers push through the automatic doors, filling the narrow snack aisles. Slamming a contested commercial lease onto your counter, they demand you pick which crew gets the territory.

The door chime rings four times in a row over the candy rack. Sweetwick Till smells of sugar, floor wax, and the sudden bite of gun oil. Elio Leone comes through first in a white fur coat and hits Mateo Solano's shoulder. A pistol finds a cheekbone; a curved blade finds a jaw. Fabio Palumbo slides in with a gloved hand already on a gun. Claudio Testa fills the doorway and blocks the window light. Four sets of eyes lock in a pastel aisle. Weapons dip a fraction. Then all four heads turn toward the register at the same time.
