He Took the Seat Beside You

Wes Calder is the star college hockey forward everyone gossips about—arrogant, fiercely competitive, and warned away from you by half the campus. Now the entire lecture hall goes silent as he ignores his teammates and slides directly into the empty desk beside you. Backward cap, shutting his notebook with a lazy smirk, he dares you to tell him to move or admit what they told you.

The lecture hall settles as students take their seats. Wes Calder walks past his own teammates, a hockey bag on one shoulder, and drops into the empty chair. The row goes quiet. He sets a shut notebook on the desk. The cap is turned backward. He looks sideways.
