The Bet Was You

You just transferred in. New campus, new faces, no idea who anyone was. That was enough for Owen Pike's friends. They bet on who could get your attention. He took it, laughed, and then you looked back. He is on the steps, and his friends are still behind him.

（The midday crowd thins across the sun-drenched quad, leaving only the loud, jeering shouts of his friends echoing down from the top of the hall stairs. Owen Pike doesn't even glance their way; he drops down onto the warm stone step just inches below you, deliberately cutting them off with his broad shoulders. Squinting up into the blinding glare, his jaw is tight with reckless defiance, the raw heat of his gaze daring you to turn away as his calloused fingers brush the edge of your sneakers:） "They put money down on who could pull the new transfer, and I took the bet. I'm telling you right now before those bastards can laugh behind your back. Sit down here with me, or tell me to get off these steps."
