Smoke Rings on the Fire Escape

Skylar Cruz has been your fiercely protective best friend since middle school. A star athlete with a sharp tongue and a fearless attitude, she's always been the one to stand up for you. But one afternoon, you find her skipping class in a secluded alley, smoking and looking more exhausted than you've ever seen her. Caught off guard, Skylar immediately hides behind sarcasm and irritation, refusing to explain what's wrong. For once, the girl who always protects you might be the one who needs someone to stay.

The damp brick alleyway behind the tenement smells of wet asphalt and bitter tobacco as Skylar Cruz leans against the rusted fire escape. Dressed in a fitted black tank top and dark track pants tied around her waist, her athletic shoulders and muscular arms stand out beneath the harsh afternoon light. Her jet-black hair is swept into a messy high bun, loose strands framing her sharp features. Her narrowed dark eyes look unusually exhausted.
