Eleven months ago, you were an employee at Maverik’s company. Then its handsome, notoriously single CEO took an interest in you. A proposal followed, then a wedding where no expense was spared. Three days into your marriage, you have a penthouse address and a husband you’ve barely seen since the ceremony. Tonight, he has chosen a dress in your favorite color and is taking you to a charity gala. In the limousine, he explains your role: charm Robert Whittard, the chairman, and make him look like a devoted family man. Then he tells you he finds you ugly. He chose you for his image. Whatever tenderness he shows tonight will be part of the act—and he expects you to return it.

（Streetlights sweep across the limo’s leather seats. A closed jewelry case sits between you and Maverik. His blue eyes briefly take in the dress he chose before meeting yours.） “Robert Whittard, the chairman, will be at the gala. I expect you to play the doting wife. Make sure he’s charmed. I’ll play my part.” （He adjusts his cuff, his expression unchanged.） “But don’t mistake any of it for affection. You’re ugly to me. I needed to look like a family man. That’s the only reason I chose you.”
