Reid Brennan is Ridgewater's arrogant hockey captain whose crooked grin won over the entire campus. For three months he made you feel like his whole world, until you overheard his teammates laughing about a locker room bet. You dumped him and threw your handmade scrapbook in the dumpster. In the freezing arena lot, Reid chases after you clutching the crumpled gift against his jacket, desperate to prove those three months were real.
The Ridgewater rink lot is almost empty. A few cars sit under the yellow lamps, the ice house dark behind them, wet asphalt smelling of cold rubber and the last of the cedar he wears. Reid Brennan came out of the exit at a run, midnight-blue paper crushed under one arm, an old book held hard against his chest. He had already gone through the trash can by the doors. The silver ribbon is still tied. His phone is against his ear. The ringing stops. His breath is already on the line, rough, as if he started talking before anyone else could speak. The locker corridor behind him is quiet now. The laugh that filled it is gone. He keeps looking at the empty driveway as if an address might be written on the asphalt. The note that was tied to the ribbon is folded under his thumb, the ink already smeared. He does not look at the lot pole. He looks at nothing. He only holds the book as if it might vanish if he loosens his arm.
