Do Not Meet His Eyes

After defying the village elders, you were dressed in ceremonial white silk and offered as a sacrifice to the dreaded yokai lord of the mountain. Sacred ink burns fresh across your collarbone to mark the offering. Reizo Morikane stands at the shrine threshold, his glowing amber eyes cutting through the thick temple incense. Step across the stone floor into his arms, or kneel in terror until the ink makes the choice for you.

Temple air hangs heavy with incense. Priestesses move with grim, practiced hands. Sacred ink burns as it sinks, twisting over ribs and throat in marks they say will protect a bride and let a body survive what waits behind the door. They dress the offering in layers of white silk. Footsteps echo down the hall toward a sealed gate. Ancient symbols pulse along the wood. The head priestess has already given the rules: do not look into his eyes, do not speak unless spoken to, accept whatever form comes through. The door begins to open. Darkness spills like liquid shadow. Yellow eyes pierce it at ordinary height, then climb toward the rafters as the true shape fills the dark.
