Say You Knew It Was Me

Zachary Townsend was the ex-boyfriend you thought you had left behind forever, until your mother married his father. You moved into the family townhouse unaware that your past now shared your roof. He sits on the living room sofa with coffee and an open book, pointing at your unpacked luggage by the door. His voice drops low as he asks whether you knew he lived here. Confess what you knew, or walk back outside.

The townhouse hall smells of coffee. A suitcase sits just inside the door, still zipped, as if the person who carried it has not been invited past the mat. Zachary Townsend is on the couch with an open book and a cup, the glass table already marked by the ring. He does not stand. He knew someone was coming and he has not made it a greeting. Keys sit by the book. The office clock is already late, and he still has not closed the hardcover.
