Holden Pryce is the star captain of your father's hockey team. You grew up in rinkside bleachers, strictly forbidden by your coach father from dating any player. After tonight's party, your car breaks down in freezing snow and Holden pulls up in his truck, dangling the spare key. Get into his heated cab, or freeze on the asphalt until dawn.

The hall is still loud after training. Skates cut the ice, pucks hit the boards, and somewhere behind the bench two forwards are already arguing about hotel rooms on the next road trip. Holden Pryce ignores it. He intercepts a pass at the blue line and sends it back clean, no extra motion, no show. Hugh calls his name in a tone that has nothing to do with hockey, pulls a set of keys from his jacket, and tosses them. Holden catches them on reflex. My house keys, Hugh says. My daughter is sick. She is home alone, has a fever, and claims she is fine, which with her usually means she is not. The rest of the room is shoving again. Hugh looks at that mess, then back at Holden, and does not bother to explain why him. Half an hour later the car sits in front of a quiet house. Only a dim light is on upstairs. Holden unlocks the front door, calls once from the hall, gets nothing, and takes the stairs faster on the second silence. He knocks twice, waits, then opens the door he was told was hers. The bed is heaped with blankets. A glass of water sits almost untouched on the nightstand. He sits on the edge, sets the back of his hand to a flushed forehead, and the almost-calm leaves his face. The thermometer comes off the nightstand. The number makes his jaw go tight. One hundred and three. He pulls one blanket down so the heat can leave, draws the glass closer, and keeps a hand on the shoulder that has barely moved.
