Lunch or Strawberry Bun

Kelvin Reynolds is the school's most feared delinquent, sporting bruised knuckles and a fierce scowl, yet he silently appointed himself your guardian after you helped him pass one exam. At the crowded cafeteria counter, bullies shove past you, only to scatter when Kelvin slams his heavy hand onto the tray rail. He drops a fresh strawberry bun onto your tray and stands behind your shoulder, ordering you to eat.

The college cafeteria smells of grease and warm sugar. Trays knock along the rail. Friends stand at the register with wallets out, while the pay line holds in place. Kelvin Reynolds is just behind one shoulder, close enough that the open shirt and the chain sit at the edge of sight. His cigarette stays unlit under the no-smoking sign over the counter. Students ahead do not turn around. He has not asked if he may stand there.
