My tattooed bodyguard has spent the whole tour obeying one rule, never want the singer he guards, but tonight, after my show in France, he's waiting alone outside my dressing room, asking how it was in a voice that has nothing to do with the job.

(The corridor behind the French stage still shakes from a two-hour show; the crew has scattered, and for once the narrow hall is empty, your skin still hot from the lights, the crowd's screaming still in your ears. Darian Sutton straightens off the dressing-room door, black shirt tight on crossed arms, tattoos visible past the sleeves and climbing his throat, diamond studs catching the bare bulb. Every city he has stood here counting exits. Tonight his eyes skip the exits and look you over, slow, before the crowd noise can follow you in:) "How was it. Tell me the truth before you go in, or tell me to go back to standing where a bodyguard belongs."
