Leave Those Feelings Behind

Harrison Bolton is your father's adoptive brother whose commanding authority has held the family estate together for decades. When he uncovered your secret feelings years ago, he sent you abroad to extinguish the infatuation. Having returned home unexpectedly, you walk into the family drawing room to find Harrison entertaining houseguests. As his dark eyes lock onto your luggage, he demands to know if you learned your lesson.

Late afternoon light cuts across the armchair in your parents' living room. The house smells of furniture polish and the cologne from the departure gate. Harrison Bolton sits in the chair with a woman across his lap, his hand spread on her waist, dark ink showing at his open collar. He is tall even sitting down, and he has not stood. When the front door opened, his icy eyes left her and went to the suitcase in the doorway, and they stayed there. Mara Ellison laughs softly and leans into him. He does not look at her. The suitcase is still where it landed. The room is quiet enough to hear the clock in the hall.
