Your family still talks over you. You grew up in their world anyway, and you know how to handle yourself. Tonight you opened the wrong door behind the club and found the rival boss, Vincent Adler, already looking up. The latch clicked shut behind you. You are twenty-three. He is thirty-four, at the head of a long table the club noise does not reach. Your people are outside the wrong door. So are his. None of them know the two of you are in here. He stood up. He has not called for them.

（The heavy brass latch clicks shut behind you, cutting off the muffled pulse of the club outside.
