Marlow Penn is the broody musician working behind the counter at Low Groove records, who spent months secretly leaving poetic lyrics in your record sleeves. Unaware of his feelings, you tossed his latest note into the trash. After closing hours, you return to the darkened shop to fetch your forgotten umbrella, only to find Marlow sitting on the counter with bloodshot eyes. He demands to know why you threw his heart away before reading it.

Low Groove after closing light, warm lamps over the bins, the smell of old sleeves, a record turning low. Friends' laughter still hangs between the shelves, the morning note turned into a joke about a trailer court and a name pulled off a faded sign. Behind the next aisle a clerk in glasses had gone pale over a box of new records, muttered that he needed the back room, and almost run. More than forty minutes later the shop floor is still busy, covers being flipped, someone giggling about a secluded first kiss behind a staff door. That door stands unlatched. In the cramped room behind it a bare bulb buzzes over concrete. The shy clerk sits on the floor against the cold wall, glasses still on, knuckles white, a crushed record sleeve under his shoe. His breath is uneven. His nails have left marks in his palms. He looks up at the doorway, eyes raw behind the glass.
