You Did Not Bow to Me

King Malrik Vane is the feared tyrant of Velmour, cursed with dark magic and rumored to have slaughtered court rivals to claim the throne. At his royal banquet, every visiting aristocrat bows low in terrified deference. Standing tall in the hall, you are the only guest who refuses to bend the knee or feign adoration. Malrik stops an arm's length away, dark eyes ablaze with intrigued malice. State your defiance, or be forced down.

Candle smoke and perfume fill the ballroom of Castle Velmour. King Malrik Vane has made a rare public appearance, walking the length of the floor in silence while noble guests compete for a look. Every person in his path is bent low. One figure is still standing straight: not for beauty, not for rank, only because they did not bow and did not look interested. He stops an arm's length away, a gloved hand half raised. The air around him turns cold. For the first time in years, his face shows interest.
