You have been married to Graham Ellery long enough for domestic habits to feel permanent, yet his secretive departures continue without explanation. Every evening just before dusk, he packs a leather valise and disappears until sunrise. Tonight, you block the front foyer before he can slip past the threshold. His hand freezes on the brass knob as he studies your resolute stance, waiting to see if you will finally demand the truth.

Evening air sits in the front hall. Graham Ellery has already chosen the hour. He turns one cufflink with a composed face, then reaches for his coat and settles it on his arm as if the motion were as ordinary as brushing his teeth. Polished leather clicks once on the floor. He does not kiss anyone on the way out. A brief, distant glance, then his posture sets against protest. He walks to the door, pauses without turning fully, and lets his hand rest on the knob. The calm in his face has a question under it.
