Choose the Dangerous Beast

At the state hybrid auction where docile pets fetch fortunes, you deliberately signed the liability waiver for Spencer Lindstrom—a battle-scarred wolf beastman considered uncontrollable. In the dim holding pen, armed guards retreat behind reinforced glass. Spencer strides forward with a bare, scarred chest and bared fangs. He boxes you against the concrete wall, daring you to prove you won't abandon him.

The Halden Registry sits behind a wide glass front: high ceilings, planted courtyards, and evaluation wings that smell like cleaner and wet earth. Screens in the lobby cycle through available profiles. Humans and hybrids cross the floor and do not linger on one another's faces. An employee at the desk had checked the system twice, lost part of a professional smile, and said there were no companions left to bond — then opened one last file and turned the monitor away from the crowd. The hallway past the lobby is quieter. Fluorescent light runs the length of it. At the end, a glass interview room waits, bright and bare except for a table and two chairs. A closed file lies between them. Spencer Lindstrom sits back in one chair, enormous and unhurried, long dark hair half tied, his jacket hung over the spare seat. Ice-blue eyes rest on the hands across the table. Dark scales shift once at his collar as he tastes the air. He has been in this building for years without a signed bond. He does not rush the silence.
