Hired by Your Bitter Ex

Adrian Pell was once the boy from your stairwell, your first love until he vanished eleven years ago to make a clean break for the family firm—leaving behind over four thousand days of absolute silence. You never expected to cross paths again, until you walked into the final-round interview at Redfern, only to find the boy from the stairs now running the entire building. Now he stands at the head of the glass boardroom table, hands resting on his empty chair, looking at your resume. He hasn't forgotten how things ended, and he's not planning to make this easy.

The heavy glass door clicks shut, cutting off the hum of the trading floor outside and sealing the boardroom in sharp, pressurized silence. Adrian Pell stands tall at the head of the table, his executive chair left pointedly empty. Your résumé lies squarely on the dark walnut wood between you. When he turns, the tailored charcoal suit frames a silhouette that is entirely unfamiliar, yet the faint citrus on his cuffs belongs instantly to a past you know by heart.
