He Called You by Her Name

For two years, you have tended to professional boxer Mateo Navarro after every brutal bout, bandaging his cuts and keeping his volatile temper grounded. Tonight, fresh off a title victory in a quiet locker room, his mouth pressed against your throat in the dark and whispered the name of his ex. Mateo freezes with his taped hands still gripping your hips, daring you to call it a slip of the tongue or walk out the gym door forever.

Pale city light sits on the kitchen stone. The grinder has gone quiet. He sets a mug within reach the way he has for years, gold chain at his throat, wrapped knuckles still on the handle.
