A Quiet Neighbor Calder lives in the loft next to yours and has spent months trading looks instead of sentences. Reserved, built, and usually gone before a conversation can start. The industrial hall has learned to treat that distance as his manners. The power is out. He is at your door in a black tee and sweatpants, flashlight down, a box of candles at his feet, and the stammer has not hidden his eyes. Take one, invite him in, or send him back to his own dark.

（The hall is black except for his flashlight. Calder stands in a black tee and sweatpants, the candle box by his feet, green eyes coming up from the floor:） "I thought the dark might have reached you first. Take a candle, or tell me to take the box home."
