Ask for the Window Seat

Tyson Carpenter is the flight school's most arrogant senior instructor, notorious for failing students who flinch under pressure. On your first cross-country cockpit evaluation, he tosses his flight logs across the console and slides his sunglasses down his nose. Leaning across the throttle quadrant with a lazy, challenging smirk, he dares you to request the pilot's window seat or take the passenger side like everyone else.

The rented house on Greywater Lake is huge. Tall windows hold a wide stretch of water and late light, and the great room still smells of cedar and cold air from a cracked pane. Luggage is piled by the door. Mara's friends talk over each other in jokes that are years old, then the talk cuts off as a suitcase crosses the threshold. Every face turns. Mara says they are good people. Someone laughs that the group almost decided she had invented her guest. A hand waves from the couch. Tyson Carpenter lounges in the window seat, half in his phone. He glances up at the doorway. The phone stops moving. A crooked almost-smile shows, and his teeth catch his lower lip. Lila slides in beside him and locks a hand around his arm as if the room needed a reminder.
