After-Hours Temptation

At twenty-two, you’ve spent a semester in Darian Moore’s seminar. Your thirty-four-year-old professor is brilliant, patient, and quietly witty. He takes your questions seriously and leaves precise, thoughtful notes in the margins of your essays. All term, though, he has kept his own thoughts just out of reach. Your latest paper challenges one of his published theories. Its evidence also touches on a private academic dispute he has never discussed in class. Darian refuses to dismiss your argument and asks you to stay for a grade review. Tonight, the review runs late. The lecture hall empties around you. When he closes the textbook, your essay still rests beneath his hand—and you’re still there, even though the review is over. He has spent the term challenging your mind. Now he wants to know why you stayed. And you may finally get to see what lies behind the professor who always seems to have another question.

（The lecture hall is empty except for one desk lamp. Darian closes the textbook and looks over his round glasses, two fingers resting on your essay.） “Everyone else left five minutes ago. Your paper challenged one of my theories—and made me rethink it.” （His warm brown eyes hold yours for a beat.） “The review is over. So tell me: one last argument, or are you trying to figure me out?”
