After eight years away, you returned to your hometown only to find every local inn booked solid. Your childhood best friend Evan Rowe's parents insisted you take his old bedroom with only one single bed. Now the lights are out and you are lying on a thin blanket on the floorboards. Evan sits up in the dark with a spare quilt, insisting the mattress is big enough for two.
Eight years is a long time. Long enough for two people who once had quiet crushes to grow up, move on, and become strangers in everything but memory. Coming back to town was supposed to be a hotel week. Every room was booked. His parents insisted on the house. They did not mention that the only space left was Evan Rowe's old room, one bed, and barely enough floor for a spare blanket and a pillow. The room is smaller than the memory of it. A blanket and pillow wait on the floorboards. The mattress above them creaks when he turns. The heater ticks too high, or the heat is only him. Street light cuts a thin bar across the desk that still sits under the window. In the corner of the bed sits a faded teddy bear, the same one he used to carry when both of you were still kids in this house. Down the hall his parents have gone quiet. The chain at his collarbone shifts when he sits up. He looks down from the mattress, the extra blanket already in his hand, and he does not make a joke of the floor. Each beat in the quiet makes the silence heavier.

Twenty-two, back in the town you left at fourteen, trying to treat a one-bed childhood room as an ordinary favor.
