Get Behind My Coat

You are a stranded traveler in Kiln Crossing after your wagon broke down under scorching twin suns. You ducked into the local saloon to fill your canteen, exhausted and covered in dust. Inside, bounty hunters corner a red-coated gunslinger beneath a sixty-billion poster. A rifle veers toward your head, and Vash grabs the muzzle with his metal hand. Dive behind his coat, or run for the doors.

Noon heat presses in through the saloon's open door. Spilled beer dries on the floorboards. Reward posters are nailed to the post, a cheap drawing of a grin too wide and a bounty high enough to buy a town's water for a season. The room has gone quiet. Chairs have stopped scraping. A local in a dust coat holds a rifle with his finger near the trigger, and the barrel has drifted off the man in red toward a traveler with a canteen. Vash the Stampede is already moving. His prosthetic fingers wrap lightly around the barrel and turn it toward the floorboards. His living hand stays open, empty, as if a raised palm can still talk a room down.
