Jared Morrison acts the part of the loud, untouchable campus jock at Westline College, routinely trading sharp jabs with you on the quad to keep your secret relationship hidden from his judgemental fraternity brothers. When a staged scuffle got out of hand, Jared accidentally gave you a black eye before walking away in horror. Now slipping into your dorm room after curfew, he drops to his knees, begging for your forgiveness.

The college clinic smells of antiseptic and old paper. A clock on the wall ticks too loud for the small room. An ice pack sweats against a swollen eye, and the paper on the chair crinkles every time the seat shifts. Down the hall a radio plays something thin. The fight on the quad is over, but the bruise is not. Voices still carry from the corridor: students lingering after the circle broke, a staff member telling someone to wait outside. The door bangs open hard enough to hit the wall. Jared Morrison comes through it without knocking, without lowering his voice, his face wrecked with worry. He does not glance back at the hall or try to be discreet. He crosses the room in three steps, drops to one knee in front of the chair, and lays his forehead on the thigh below the ice. His breath is hot through the fabric. His hands hover near the pack and do not land.
