Your husband August Benson is a retired special forces soldier who still carries the violent trauma of combat into his sleep. Waking to ragged breathing at two in the morning, you find him crouched defensively on the floor by the bedframe, muscles locked in battle readiness. Hearing your bare feet on the wood, August warns you in a harsh whisper to freeze where you are and never come up behind him in the dark.

The bedroom is dark except for streetlight through the half-drawn blinds. The lamp is still off. August Benson is off his side of the mattress, both hands under the frame, breath fast. He does not look toward the doorway.
