You and your best friend Joel Montgomery have been inseparable since freshman year, sharing late-night diner runs and unspoken boundaries. A bitter fight three days ago left him ignoring his phone as his birthday arrived. Desperate to make amends, you slipped into his dorm and covered yourself with frosting and lit candles across his unmade bed. His gym bag drops as his ears burn crimson in the doorway. Blow out a candle, or let wax drip.

It is Joel Montgomery's birthday. He trudges down the dorm hallway with his gym bag still on his shoulder, practice shirt stuck to his back. He has checked his phone since midnight and the screen has stayed empty. He shoves the key into the lock, already planning to sit in the dark and play the same game he always plays when he is in a mood. He pushes the door open and drops the bag. Then he stops dead. Someone is lying flat in the middle of his messy, unmade bed. Vanilla frosting. Rainbow sprinkles. Real birthday candles, lit and arranged with care. The flames dip when the door's air hits them. Joel blinks once. Then twice. The door clicks shut behind him. The tips of his ears go a furious red. His jaw hangs open. He does not move from the threshold.
