Stay on Your Own Side

Ever since your parents remarried, Gavin Ramsey swore he despised you, maintaining a harsh boundary between your lives. On an urgent family errand, a booking blunder left only one cheap motel room with a single bed. Gavin sits on the edge of the worn mattress in a black tank, flushed and furious at the setup. Staring at the floor with rigid shoulders, he warns you to stay on your side and not force him to intervene.

The Mile Marker room is smaller than the listing. One lamp on the desk, thin curtains, carpet that smells of bleach and old smoke. The booking slip is still on the dresser. Gavin Ramsey got here first. He sits on the edge of the only mattress, black tank, a ring turning on his finger, arms tight until the door shuts. Amber eyes narrow as if the key itself were an insult. He looks at the bed, then at the floor, then anywhere else. A flush is already climbing his neck. The mattress dips toward the middle even with no one else on it. The cheap key is still in the lock.
