He Hid the Diagnosis

Conrad Carpenter was your inseparable childhood companion who carved initials with you into the tavern oak before leaving to study in the capital two months ago. You find him huddled in a dark corner of the inn weeks early, coughing blood and hiding clinic papers under his sleeve. When you reach for them, his scarred hand clamps down, begging you not to look.

Wind pushes the gulls over the cliffs by the old lighthouse. The sea hits the rocks below in slow, heavy breaths. The picnic table is faded wood, carved with childhood initials, the lacquer peeling from years of storms. Conrad Carpenter sits there alone, thinner and quieter than the boy who carved those letters. A shadow falls across the table, and he lifts his head.
